Book Repair 101

Join professional book conservator Cara Schlesinger and learn about book conservation:

  • what is possible to preserve
  • best practices for caring for hardcover books, new and old
  • demonstration of simple fixes that can be done at home, for weak binding, pages that have fallen out, and more
  • demonstration of how to make starch paste, used for book binding and paper conservation

Cara Schlesinger, of Faenwyl Bindery (www.faenwyl.com), is a bench-trained bookbinder and book conservator. She’s spent years as a caretaker of rare, valuable, and beloved books with two key goals: preserving their integrity and longevity as treasured objects. Cara has provided conservation services and/or custom boxes to places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library, Columbia University Libraries, and more.
